About Mesa, Arizona

In the East Valley subregion of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area, the city of Mesa has the highest population density. It is bounded on the west by Tempe, on the north by the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, on the south by Chandler and Gilbert, together with Queen Creek, and on the east by Apache Junction.

After Phoenix and Tucson, Mesa is the third-biggest city in the state of Arizona. It is also the 37th-largest city in the United States and the largest city that is not the headquarters of a county. According to the Census Bureau, as of the year 2020, the city had a total population of 504,258, making it more populated than the cities of Minneapolis, St. Louis, and Miami combined. Mesa, Arizona, is often referred to as “America’s most conservative city.”

The Polytechnic campus of Arizona State University, Benedictine University, A.T. Still University, Upper Iowa University, Mesa Community College, and Chandler-Gilbert Community College are just some institutions and colleges in Mesa that are home to more than 40,000 students combined. Institutions such as Arizona College, Carrington College, DeVry University, Pima Medical Institute, and CAE Phoenix Aviation Academy are examples of private, for-profit educational establishments.

ASU at Mesa City Center, a project offering programs from the Herberger Institute for Design and Arts that will be located in downtown Mesa and is planned to open in spring 2022, broke ground in January 2020 at Arizona State University. ASU at Mesa City Center is scheduled to open in spring 2022.

In addition, Mesa is home to the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, which has the title of the largest relief airport in the Phoenix metropolitan region. The airport is located in the southeast quadrant of the city.
